The Butt Stops Here - The Role of the Dental Professional as Tobacco Cessation Counselor
Attendees will learn how the dental professional can intervene in the world of a tobacco user to encourage and help them to quit.
Armed with a bit of knowledge about helpful cessation methods, and what works best for whom, the dental professional is often the perfect person to capture the interest and respect of the user who wants to become tobacco-free, but doesn’t know where to begin. This is a humorous overview of best communication and practice methods to encourage, aid, and assist a tobacco user to quit.

Biographical Information Nancy Long is a Registered Dental Hygienist and a Tobacco Treatment Specialist (certification by Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.) She is Treasurer on the Board of Directors of ATTUD, The Association for Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at Avila University in Kansas City, Missouri. She volunteers with Kansas City Hospice, where she helps hospice patients with oral hygiene. Nancy presents seminars about tobacco cessation and dentistry, and provides her humorous style of expertise to dentists, hygienists and other health care professionals interested in helping tobacco users quit.
